Surface preparation

Unpainted Masonry - The surface must be at least 30 days old, clean and free of oil, grease and other contaminants. Remove efflorescence with a stiff bristled brush or with an acid cleaner. Rinse thoroughly. Remove all mould and mildew. The surface may be dry or slightly damp.

Painted Surfaces - The effectiveness of Watco Dampguard on such surfaces depends entirely upon the soundness and waterproofing ability of the existing coating. Remove as much as possible. Clean and abrade any remaining coating. Take special precautions with pre 1960’s paints, since these may contain lead.

Water leaks and cracks should be patched with a suitable hydraulic cement plugging compound and allowed to dry thoroughly before applying Watco Dampguard.

Application

If appearance is critical we recommend the application of a small trial area first.

Do not thin. Stir well before use. Apply two coats by short pile roller or, preferably, brush, working the first coat well into the surface. Keep to the recommended coverage rates. Allow the first coat to dry for at least 4 hours before applying the second. Inspect the completed job for pinholes etc and reapply where necessary. Provide adequate ventilation in areas such as cellars and basements when applying. Watco Dampguard can be over coated after 14 days if desired, but this will reduce its mould resistance.
